The Phoenix Tale
Why do I rise from the ashes?
Super late but here is my entry for Day One of Flash Fiction February, put on by Bradley Ramsey! You can find the submissions library here.
This is also for a writing prompt called Trial by Fire from one of my art discord groups where we had to reinvent or tell a story directly inspired by a pre-existing fairy tale, folklore or fable.
I like to mix things so I fused these 2 prompts together to create this:
The Phoenix Tale
Two hunting parties.
Fire vs Ice.
Phoenix vs Dragon.
Separated by an ocean portal
We charge!
Talons grapple claws!
Teeth scrape beak!
Feathers, scales, and bodies float
our bloods mix
then sink.
She always said love
is the most powerful weapon.
She was right.
When I saw her sad blue eyes
my flames of war
Extinguished.
I fell in battle and was reborn
Again.
Most of my memories are gone
Except the ones we shared
The smell of our sea grass nest
The touch of her warm scales
The playful look she gives me
when I peck her.
She is my anchor to this world.
She is what ignites me.
She is my fire.
I erupt from my flaming nest of spices
And begin to look for the love
of my lives.

🤔 Upon Reflection:
Started out great and felt I had something to write a short story about. Unfortunately life got really busy but I love writing poems so I pivoted to writing a poem today. Spent 10min figuring out what to write about but then gave up and just started writing whatever popped into my head. Edited it as I went and kept changing out words until the very end. Thinking about my wife helped me with this poem. I didn’t have the idea of love being the reason why the phoenix rises from the ashes until the very end. I gave myself a 2 hr deadline today because I have to shovel a ton of snow today as soon as I finish this.
Looking forward to the next challenge! Take care!
